Roadtrip 2011; Slaggin Bay

Near Guinard Bay on the coast road is a Post Office Store at Laide,
North is a Penulsia of land with crofts linked by a minor road with passing places,
at the side of the road is a sign i have never seen anywhere else in Scotland...

Ideal for the pugsley then!...

It is in fact a rough tarmac track around 2 miles that leads to the ruins of a fishing village and secluded bay...

First you have to get around the local cattle...

Highland cattle are big hairy shaggy dozy beasts and don't move for anyone if they don't feel like it!...

Soon the ruins and the coast again come into view...

The village wasn't emptied during the Highland clearances but due to sub standard living conditions and residents moved to new housing at Laide,
The last resident was an elderly lady who left shortly after WW2 after the house, built after the black houses was raised in a fire...

Only the gable ends and doorstep remain...

The remains of the black houses look like they have sunk into the ground, but it is the peat that has risen, no longer packed down by humans and farm animals...

These are later black houses as they have fire places and chimneys,
Originally the fire was in the centre of the house and the smoke escaped through the thatch roof keeping the rain out, imagine the smoke inside?- hence the name given to highland houses...

Glass was an expensive luxery, hence the small windows...

Nice stone work...

Just beyond the ruins is the Bay...

A small path leads down beside a stream which has a wee plunge pool, ideal for a wash if camped here, today there was a wee tent shelterd from the wind and rain showers sweeping across, but no one around...

Its a great wee camp spot where i have camped many times...

A float from a Salmon Farm...

Was nice to revisit Slaggin and have the place to myself...
